Is Creatine safe for me if I have High Blood Pressure?

Question:

Is Creatine safe for me if I have High blood pressure?

Short Answer:

Creatine is likely safe if your blood pressure rates fall within a healthy range. However, if you are already on the high end, refraining from Creatine usage is probably your safest bet.

Longer Answer:

There are a variety of amazing health benefits when supplementing with Creatine, even for women. Check out this Creatine 101 video for more info. As stated previously, if your blood pressure falls within a normal or healthy range, Creatine is likely safe to consume with no ill-effects on your overall levels. However, if you are already operating with higher blood pressure, you may want to hold off until you are in a more manageable range.

While the research is a little shaky, the theory goes that kidney impairment is a potential complication for those with higher blood pressure...and kidneys are already used to help filter creatine out of your body through urine. Therefore, if already dealing with high blood pressure, additional creatine supplementation should be avoided to help prevent putting too much stress on the kidneys. However, if still considering taking the supplement (whether high BP or not) please consider consulting with your physician beforehand.
