I have PCOS. Is Balance RX safe for me?

Question:
"Can I take Balance RX if I have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS)?"

Disclaimer:
This is NOT medical advice. Please check with your doctor first to see if there is any interaction between any of these supplements with specific medications you may be taking. We cannot tell you specifically if any of our supplements will be safe for you, as that would be medical advice and every person has a unique medical history. DO NOT take Balance RX if you are pregnant, nursing, or planning to become pregnant.

Answer:
Many of the research-backed ingredients included inside Balance RX show benefit for PCOS. See the Balance RX label below, and let's break down how each aspect of Balance RX interacts with PCOS. This is something you can show your primary care doctor/endocrinologist to see if Balance RX is safe for you.

The Vitamin Blend inside Balance RX:

Vitamin B6, folate, and Vitamin B12 are particularly important in optimizing hormonal balance in PCOS. These three B-vitamins help to lower inflammation by breaking down an amino acid, called homocysteine, which is commonly elevated in women with PCOS.

Balance RX gives your body all three of these important B-vitamins, which can be helpful for PCOS. Vitamins A, D, E, and calcium inside Balance RX are also beneficial for PCOS (and general health) in the proper amounts we've included them in.

The Herbal Blend inside Balance RX:
The first powerful plant compound inside Balance RX is Maca.

Maca root is a traditional herb used to boost fertility and libido.  Maca root helps balance hormones and lower cortisol levels. It may also help treat depression, which can be a symptom of PCOS. More research is needed in this area, but Maca does show promise.

The second powerful plant compound inside Balance RX is St. John's Wort.

There has been a research intervention looking at a combination of herbs (including St. John's Wort) alongside a healthy diet and it found benefit for women with PCOS (see study). The St. John's Wort helps improve depression, which is a common in women with PCOS. That said, St. John's Wort does interact with many medications (important), so it is essential that you check with your doctor if you are taking prescription medications and want to include Balance Rx/ other products containing St. John's Wort.

The third powerful plant compound inside Balance RX is Chaste Tree Berry Extract (Vitex agnus).

There has also been research looking at a combination of herbs (including Vitex agnus) alongside a healthy diet and and it found benefit for women with PCOS (see study). Further research in this area is needed. Here are some important considerations with Vitex and PCOS.

The fourth main plant compound inside Balance RX is Epimedium.

Epimedium has powerful libido enhancing effects. There is not any research directly on Epimedium's effects on PCOS.

The remaining herbs inside Balance RX are in lower dosages. Here are some relevant links and research:

  • Black Cohosh may have benefit for PCOS (see study here).
  • Milk Thistle will help improve your liver health, which is very important with PCOS as many menstrual and fertility issues are exacerbated by the back-up of hormones within the liver. Milk thistle can help to eliminate toxins and keep the liver working efficiently (read more here).
  • There is no direct research that we are aware of on Boron and PCOS.
  • Tribulus was a part of the combination herbal therapy (alongside Vitex) that showed improvements in PCOS symptoms. See study here

Overall:
Because of the complexity of everyone's medical history (medications taken etc), we recommend you check with your doctor to see if Balance Rx is a safe supplement for you to try.
