Can I eat beans on FM30X?

Question:

Can I eat beans on FM30X?

Short Answer:

Beans or legumes can definitely be consumed in our meal plan as they can be quite nutritious packing a good deal of fiber and protein. However, the tricky part is that they should be prepared the right way to help remove potential issues.

Longer Answer:

Beans/Legumes contain lectins, which is a carb-binding protein that helps fight off insects and herbivores. Lectins are a form of anti-nutrients, meaning they can block the absorption of nutrients to your body. Additionally, they have the potential to cause harm to your gastrointestinal tract. However, not all lectins are bad as some lectins can provide positive health benefits (i.e. anti-cancer).

But as a whole, the effects can be mitigated if beans/legumes are prepared correctly. At a minimum soaking them overnight with 1-2 teaspoons of apple cider vinegar can help. But even better, pressure-cooking them prior to consuming is more ideal. Otherwise, purchasing a brand such as Eden Organics can work as they have already been prepared correctly for consumption. Though at the end of the day, we all have unique food sensitivities and it is best to remove foods that don't make us feel good while others can tolerate these same foods better!

Additionally, we are often asked if we should count the beans/legumes toward our protein or carb count since they are a rare food that is high in both. For most people, we would recommend counting it toward your carbohydrate count. While there is some protein, your meal can become pretty carb-heavy if doubling up with beans/legumes AND another carb source on top.
