How to Curb Snacking at Night
When it comes to our meal plans, a very common question is how to curb snacking in the evenings. If you are constantly finding yourself hungry in the evenings, here are a few things you could try:
- Hydrating: Ensure you are getting your adequate hydration (we are looking at half your body-weight in ounces + 32oz per day...up to a max of 150oz). Oftentimes we mistake thirst for hunger when all we needed was additional water. This also helps keep your stomach lining expanded as when our stomachs shrink down to normal size, we are triggered to eat again.
- Macros: Ensure you are getting enough of your main macros (proteins, carbs, and fats) at your meals. The goal is to eat enough during your meals so you are satiated for long enough until the next one or bed time. If you aren't getting your full serving of macros, there's a good chance your body is looking for more in the evening.
- Mindlessness: As humans, we are triggered by certain actions and lots of bad habits can be formed in the evenings. One of the more common ones is watching TV and mindless snacking. If this has been your routine for awhile, it'll take some time to reprogram your brain to avoid the snacking during this time. You can consider taking a leisurely stroll to help get your mind off eating (bonus exercise too!) So if you follow the tips above, you may be able to beat your cravings. But if you absolutely have to snack...
- Pickles! or Protein: Pickles have been the most common evening snack among our members. We're not sure if it's the salt, crunch, or tanginess but it often curbs cravings, all without the calories or guilt! Just be sure to buy a cleaner variety so you're basically eating salted cucumbers with vinegar and spices (no dyes, sugar, colorings, etc added). If pickles aren't your thing and/or you need to get your protein numbers up, eating something like clean jerky (once again, no sugars/artificial junk added) to help keep you satiated and your muscles fed overnight is a good option.
