Healthiest Flour Alternatives for Baking

Question:

What are some healthier flour alternatives I can use for baking on plan?

Short Answer:

Even indulging can be somewhat healthier if the right modifications are used. For a list of traditional flour alternatives, check out some of the healthier options below:

Longer Answer:

  • Almond Flour: Pretty much as the name states, almond flour is made up of ground almonds and is a grain/gluten-free alternative. You can gain all the benefits of eating almonds (vitamin E, omega 3s, magnesium, etc) but used as a flour. The downside is that it is much more caloric than traditional flour as you are getting quite a bit more fat (but protein also).
  • Coconut Flour: Similar to Almond Flour, you have another grain/gluten-free alternative that is also much more caloric. The flour is made from ground-up coconut meat and is a good alternative for those who cannot have nuts. (Coconut is technically a fruit, even tough the FDA has it listed as part of the tree nut family. The rare cases where people with nut allergies reacted to coconut, were allergic to coconuts specifically.) You can also gain some of the amazing MCT benefits from using Coconut Flour.
  • Cassava Flour: Cassava flour comes from the cassava plant, which is ground to make flour. Like the above, Cassava Flour is grain/gluten-free but what makes it more unique is that it's high in resistance starch, which is similar to fiber as it bypasses digestion. Resistant starch has been shown to improve your blood glucose levels and act as a prebiotic, feeding the healthy bacteria in your gut. However, similar to consuming grains, it can contain anti-nutrients that block the absorption of nutrients into your body. But if used occasionally, this isn't a problem for most healthy people.
